The turquoise heritage buildings and sprawling lawns-totalling some 11 acreshave stood right at the heart of Bangalore for over 150 years, and the exclusivity, camaraderie and prestige associated with the city's oldest club is still as fiercely preserved by its 6,500 members. First built as a home away from home for British soldiers of the Raj in 1868, the lawns have always been the heart of the club-the centre of social life, where one comes for leisure and conversation, a nice tea and sandwiches outdoors or a game of croquet.
It was an invited competition in 2022 by Annabelle Manwaring, the club's first woman president, that got architects Sandeep Khosla and Amaresh Anand involved in reimagining the club's iconic lawns. Bangaloreans through and through, Khosla and Anand have countless recollections and immense sentiments attached to the club-of going there for swims during school breaks, of sneaking into the Umbrella bar as adolescents, of weddings at the Brigadier Hill Annexe, birthdays and parties on the main lawn.
