Situated on a 1-acre plot near the Muvattupuzha river in Kolenchery, Kerala, India, The Cantilever House is a 4,327 sq ft architectural marvel designed by iGen winner Sumi Shaji of S Squared Architects. This residence stands as a remarkable example of architectural resilience and innovation, having triumphed over the challenges posed by severe flooding during the 2018 Kerala floods.
LESSONS IN RESILIENCE
The site’s susceptibility to flooding, with the water level reaching a critical 3.2 meters during the 2018 floods, presented a formidable challenge for the design team. However, rather than viewing this as a deterrent, the client envisioned the residence as a symbol of hope and prosperity for future generations. Inspired by this vision, S Squared Architects conceived a futuristic form that seamlessly harmonises with the tropical climate and landscape.
