He originally spent a couple of hundred quid on what was a retired dog car - a Ford Mondeo Estate - but is now an ironic classic that has undoubtedly appreciated significantly. So are there any unloved practical cars going begging right now?

My mates on the part-exchange front line say no, but I do think that £800-ish is the new £450. Exactly that amount would put us in a 2008 Mazda 3 2.0 Sport with just over 100,000 miles, three previous owners and a pretty solid MOT record. It was actually a dealer part exchange, so the deals are out there.
