Take for instance, the case of Scrambler motorcycles. The modern motorcycling world is riddled with impostors walking around with their high fenders and dual-purpose tyres, without any sense of ‘real’ capabilities. Scramblers which would either fall into pieces or break the rider if charted through uncharted terrains. Walking among these impostors, is the new Triumph Scrambler 400X – an attempt by a Scrambler veteran who basically kickstarted the Scrambler genre of motorcycling. So, is the new Scrambler 400X mere deception in the form of a cosmetic job or does it make the revered Scramblers of the past proud?
What makes a motorcycle, a Scrambler? Rummaging through the history pages would reveal that Scrambler motorcycles weren’t built from ground up. They were based on road-going motorcycles with lesser weight for road racing and some custom bits to support mild-offroading. The latter part being more prominent because the basic idea behind Scrambler motorcycles has always been ‘fun’, irrespective of where you’re riding them. A good Scrambler wouldn’t make you think twice before ditching the smooth asphalt for some dirt trails. Heck, it would even entice you to do that! Triumph Motorcycles were the first ones on this big blue ball to roll out a production-spec Scrambler. When a genre veteran does a Scrambler, the world sits back and takes notice.
