Volvo Trucks India attained a crucial milestone in its alternate fuel strategy. The extensive pilot that commenced with a single unit of the FM 420 4x2 LNG Tractor has progressed far enough for the company to consider commercialisation. It is hoping to replicate the success with LNG in Europe to revolutionise transportation in India. Volvo has been supplying Gas-powered trucks in Europe since 2017. At a press conference held at the Volvo Trucks’ Hosakote plant, in Bengaluru, Boddapati Dinakar, Executive Vice President of Volvo Trucks India of VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd., averred, “Volvo is exploring new alternative fuels in India. Our trucks have been quite successful in the EV business and other alternative fuels globally. We are working on meeting various fuel requirements worldwide.”
Hanna Ljungqvist, Head of Volvo Trucks India and Indonesia, described LNG as a fantastic alternative that Volvo Group has successfully implemented in Europe. “Now, we are introducing it to India, offering significant customer value in the transport industry. This technology is proven, mature, and ready for launch in India,” she stated. She drew attention to the significance of moving ahead with LNG without requiring a nationwide fuelling system to begin with. “Starting on routes with existing fuelling stations ensures readiness for deployment across India,” he opined. In line with the common goals of the commercial vehicle industry in Amrit Kaal, Bhagwan Bindiganavile, Executive Vice President of Strategic Planning, Brand, and Communication at VE Commercial Vehicles, put the spotlight on the expansion of people and goods transportation. Citing the case of the latter, he emphasised on India’s growing economy as a major driver. He drew attention to the sector as a whole turning both sophisticated and sustainable wherein Volvo Trucks is committed to playing a significant role in this growth, he emphasised.
