<p>The first race at Sebring was held in 1950. The location was originally Hendricks Army Airfield, a training facility for the U.S. Army Air Forces B-17 pilots. After 1946, aeronautical engineer, motorsports enthusiast, and entrepreneur Alec Ulmann was looking for locations within the U.S. to stage an endurance race similar to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and ultimately landed on Sebring (pun intended). The first 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race was held on March 15, 1952. Originally, the circuit measured 3.5 miles of mixed concrete and asphalt surfaces. The track&rsquo;s current configuration spans 3.74 miles, and the lap record of 1:41.800 was set by Kamui Kobayashi in 2019 in a Toyota LMP1 prototype car. The first 12 Hours of Sebring was won by Harry Gray and Larry Kulok in a Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica.</p>

<p>On their website, Sebring International Raceway lists several amusing myths and legends surrounding the circuit. Was a race ever red-flagged to a stop to clear the track of alligators? Not during one of the 12-Hour races, but alligators do make their way onto the track occasionally. Is a Ford GT buried at Sebring? Yes, a portion of a 1966 Ford GT40 that was involved in an accident that killed driver Bob McLean is buried somewhere on the premises.</p>
<p>Corvette Racing has experienced many successes at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Over it's 25-year history. Corvette Racing has posted 13 victories, a Sebring record. Eight of those victories were by Johnny O'Connell, Chevrolet team driver from 20012010. Prior to the start of this year's races, Corvette Racing had logged 53,631.76 miles around the Sebring circuit. That's more than two times the distance around the Earth's equator. In the IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship, Corvette Racing has scored a total of 29 wins&nbsp;and 14 Manufacturers Championships. The Corvette Racing program has won a total of 122 races worldwide, including eight at Le Mans.&nbsp;Richard Prince has been Chevrolet's team photographer since the beginning.
