EVER SINCE IT first appeared in the 1980s, the Vauxhall Astra has aimed to be all things to all people; even the first version could be had in three different body styles. Today's eighth-generation car continues to broaden its appeal with the new Astra Electric, expanding the range beyond its petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options.
On the outside, this version looks virtually identical to other Astras, but it's powered by a 154bhp electric motor that drives its front wheels, with energy being provided by a battery with a 51kWh usable capacity. Both the motor and battery are shared with recently updated or incoming models from brands within the same group, including the Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-2008 small SUVS and Peugeot's new e-308 family hatchback.
That power output is relatively modest, though, and means the Astra Electric can accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.2sec slower than rivals such as the Cupra Born and MG 4 EV. Still, the instant accelerator response that you get with an electric motor means it's sprightly enough for most everyday driving situations.
