The awards were made at an annual awards luncheon hosted by Heineken Beverages at Durbanville Hills Winery in the Western Cape.
This took the number of people who attained this qualification in the 44-year history of the CWA to 113. Of the active members, 74% were in the Western Cape, 22% in Gauteng, 3% in KwaZuluNatal and 1% from the Free State.
The first three Cape Wine Masters to graduate in 1983 were Bennie Howard, the late Duimpie Bayly and the late Tony Mossop. They were also the founding members of the ICWM that same year.
A dissertation formed part of the course, which had to be completed within five years. Malan’s dissertation investigated the potential benefits of using commercial enzymes in South African wine production.
