Understanding the potential of prefabricated homes

A prefab home, or ‘prefabricated’ home, is a type of house that is built using components or modules that are manufactured in a factory and then transported to the construction site for assembly. Prefabrication involves the construction of various parts of the house, such as wall panels, roof sections, and even entire rooms or modules, in a controlled factory environment. Once these components are completed, they are transported to the building site, where they are assembled to create the final home.

Prefab homes have gained popularity due to their efficiency, quality, and design versatility. They are used for a range of purposes, from single-family residences to multifamily housing, vacation homes, and even commercial buildings. Prefabrication techniques continue to advance, offering innovative solutions for housing needs. Essentially, prefab homes are built in a factory, which allows for efficient construction processes. This can lead to shorter construction times compared with traditional on-site construction. The controlled factory environment enables rigorous quality control measures, resulting in well-constructed and consistently high-quality components. Prefab homes come in a variety of styles and designs, from traditional to modern, and can be customised to suit the homeowner’s preferences. Some prefab homes are designed with energy-efficient features and sustainable materials, making them environmentally friendly.

They are also often more cost-effective and budgets are easier to contain, as labour and materials are closely controlled.

Prefab homes are designed to be transportable, which can be especially advantageous in remote or challenging construction locations.
