He was born to mother Sarada Devi and father Debendranath Tagore, on 7th May 1861 in Jorasanko Thakubai in Kolkata. He belonged to an affluent family and was the youngest member in the family. He was popularly known as Bard of Bengal and people used to call him Gurudev. He has made his mark in the field of literature and the contribution he has made for the literature of Bengali and English is beyond comparison. He was the first Non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for poetry collection named 'Gitanjali', in 1913, which was his biggest achievement.
He was also an influential artist and musician. He wrote around 2230 songs and painted over 3000 paintings. Along with Indian National Anthem, he also composed the National Anthems of Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. He also founded Viswa Bharti University. His poets were viewed as spiritual and mercurial. He transformed the literature of Bengali. At the age of sixteen, he released his first substantial poems under the pseudonym, 'Bhanusimha' (Sun Lion). Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures.
