Reading is a habit that very few Mexicans have, which at the same time ends up affecting the way in which these readers conceive the informational content by subscription and payment.
Statistics indicated that Mexicans read, in 2016, 5.8 books per year. Today, according to the INEGI Reading Module 2022, they only read 3.9 books. On the other hand, countries like Iceland and Finland read an average of more than 40 books a year.
The habit of reading is being lost and as a consequence there is a lack of interest in topics with closed content, which affects magazines and the digital press.
According to a study by PwC, known as 'Entertainment and Media Outlook', revenue from printed newspapers managed to capture more than one billion dollars in the country, while those sold digitally accumulated only 48 million. This made it clear that in Mexico, we are not ready to consider it a sustainable income.
James Booth, editorial director of TheToyZone, considers; however, that exclusive content can be an effective way to build subscriber loyalty and make them feel valued.
