MUSICAL PRODIGY AND BUDDING ACTOR LISA MISHRA SHARES HER JOURNEY WITH SRIJANI ROY CHOWDHURY
SRIJANI ROY CHOWDHURY
Chasing dreams

Meeting Lisa Mishra, a dynamic talent whose journey from Berhampur, Odisha, to the bustling streets of Chicago and beyond is nothing short of inspiring. Graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University with a double major in economics and religion, Lisa has always been a curious soul, eager to explore the world around her. But it was her passion for music that truly set her on a vibrant path.

At just 13, Lisa launched her YouTube channel, sharing her love for music with the world. Fast forward to 2017 and she was collaborating with the talented Jamila Woods to create the catchy theme song for the Emmy-nominated web series Brown Girls. The excitement didn’t stop there. In 2018, a mesmerising mashup of the Hindi song Tareefan and Let me love you caught the eye of none other than Sonam Kapoor Ahuja.

This led to an unforgettable trip to India, where Lisa recorded the reprise of Tareefan for the hit film Veere Di Wedding, rubbing shoulders with Bollywood’s elite. After Tareefan, she has worked on songs like The Wakhra Song from Judgementall Hai Kya (2019), Nadaaniyaan from The Sky Is Pink (2019) and also the party-anthem Chandigarh mein from Good Newwz (2019).

Despite the highs, Lisa’s path has been filled with challenges.

Kiran Rao, Payal Kapadia and Shuchi Talati are redefining contemporary Indian cinema by placing women at the centre of their narratives, offering a refreshing perspective through the female gaze. Their films, Laapataa Ladies, All We Imagine As Light, and Girls Will Be Girls, not only explore women-oriented stories but also challenge the traditional male-dominated lens of storytelling, creating nuanced portrayals of women's experiences, aspirations and struggles.
