Professor charged as sly jewel thief

STICKY-FINGERED geezer Lawrence Gray weaseled his way into high society and snatched tens of thousands of dollars in jewelry from wealthy East Coast elites —right out from under their snooty noses, authorities charge.

Gray, 79, swiped at least seven rare and valuable items — including a platinum Verdura brooch, sapphire, emerald and diamond earclips by Oscar Heyman & Brothers, a Van Cleef & Arpels ruby ring and a 19thcentury gold pocket watch — which he sold for $45,000 at a Big Apple auction house between 2016 and 2018, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
