Some experts believe the increase in sightings is due to the 6,000 or so Starlink satellites that Elon Musk’s company SpaceX has launched into orbit in recent years to expand internet accessibility to remote areas.
“With Starlink and other phenomena up there in the night sky, you see more and more stuff that you can’t explain right away,” notes Michael Endl, a professor of astronomy and physics at Austin Community College.
