Should you be taking a probiotic supplement? We asked a dietitian for some expert advice

Most people are surprised to learn not only how extensive their gut is - your intestines alone are at least 15ft longbut also how much it affects their overall health.

"Think of your gut as a long tube from mouth to bottom," says Sophie Medlin, consultant colorectal dietitian and head of nutritional research at supplement brand Heights. "It actually comprises the stomach, small and large intestines, pancreas and liver."

Your gut function, which is controlled by its microbiome - an ecosystem of bacteria and other microbes - goes way beyond digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Sophie says: "Bacteria in your gut make compounds that regulate your immune system and produce neurotransmitters for the brain, as well as supporting hormonal health, levels of inflammation and many other aspects of your health."
