Harry Styles was clearly a man in love. In April, he gushed to radio host Howard Stern about what "a wonderful experience" he'd had being directed by Olivia Wilde in Don't Worry Darling. "Acting requires a lot of trust if you want to give it everything," the pop star - who fell for Olivia as they made the movie, in which she also appears, in late 2020 explained, "and being able to trust your director is a gift."
But now that trust has been broken. In the weeks leading up to the film's Sept. 23 release, Olivia found herself at the center of increasing controversy. On Aug. 26, Shia LaBeouf - who was originally cast in Harry's role-publicly called her out for implying he'd been fired from the project, warning that "if lies are repeated enough in the public, they become truth," as he urged her to "correct the narrative" and admit that he actually quit her film. Meanwhile, ongoing whispers of a feud between Olivia and her leading lady, Florence Pugh, grew to a roar when Florence skipped a press conference for the flick that the rest of the cast attended during the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 5, only showing up for the premiere that night. She's also declined various interview opportunities ahead of the flick's theatrical debut.
"It just became too much drama for Harry. He had enough and quietly dumped Olivia," claims a source, noting that the pair kept their distance in Italy, refusing to sit or pose for photos next to each other or even interact on the red carpet. "Harry did it before the Venice premiere, but the writing was on the wall way before they ever stepped foot in Europe. Olivia made everything too toxic."
