We’re used to chats with Geordie TV favorite Vicky Pattison being upbeat, animated, and bubbly.
But while the 34-year-old is as kind as always, it’s clear today’s interview is more poignant and sombre than usual as we delve into her childhood with her alcoholic dad, John.
The star, who found fame as one of the Geordie Shore OGs, bravely opens up about her fears of following in his footsteps in the new Channel 4 documentary Vicky Pattison: My Dad, Alcohol And Me.
“I had everything I’d ever wanted and I still wasn’t happy, I was self-sabotaging with alcohol and I knew I was going to lose everything I’d worked for,” she candidly tells us of drinking excessively after her I’m A Celeb win in 2015.
“I thought to myself, ‘If you don’t take control of your actions, you’re going to end up alone and like your dad,’ which has always been my greatest fear.”
Vicky – who is happily engaged to former TOWIE star Ercan Ramadan – admits she has an addictive personality, but she insists that she’s working towards “finding that middle ground” and is “doing well at the moment”.
Here, Vicky opens up about why it’s “difficult” to love her dad and the steps she takes to avoid following in his footsteps...
Hi, Vicky. Tell us a bit about your childhood...
When you’re a child you just assume your home life is normal because that’s all you’ve ever been exposed to. I was really loved, my mum and dad were great parents, my dad was just ill. I’m very grateful for my parents, in particular my mum who did a very good job of shielding us from everything.
