CROWNING GLORY: WAVING IN A NEW ERA

A deafening volley of cheers erupted from the crowds waiting patiently in the Mall outside Buckingham Palace as our newly crowned King and Queen stepped out from the Centre Room onto the balcony with their Pages of Honour. For King Charles, the wonderful moment was tinged with reflection - the last time he had appeared on the famous balcony was alongside his late mother, to celebrate her platinum jubilee in June last year.

After Queen Elizabeth II's death on 8 September, the King made an address to the nation in which he pledged, "I shall endeavour to serve you with loyalty, respect, and love, as I have throughout my life."

While her absence was felt by all, the balcony scene was nevertheless a vision of joy and happiness for the monarch and the 14 family members who stood with him. The King was still wearing his purple Robe of State and Imperial State Crown, while at his side was his own "constant strength and guide" Queen Camilla, who looked resplendent in her regalia. Her delight was evident as she gazed out at the undulating sea of Union flags and listened to the adoring crowd chanting "hurrah" and "long live the King and Queen!"

Sharing this special moment with the King was his eldest son, the Prince of Wales, his wife, the Princess of Wales and their two youngest children, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five.

The two youngsters touched the hearts of millions of viewers across the world as they waved enthusiastically, soaking up the celebratory atmosphere. Their older brother, nine-year-old George, was also on the balcony as a royal Page of Honour, and was still in his ceremonial uniform. Charlotte appeared to have perfected her "royal wave", and little Louis followed suit by breaking out into a double wave. He was also spotted drumming his hands on the balustrade as if playing the piano, clearly not fazed by the crowds below.
