On the heels of learning of Stefan and Gabi’s engagement, EJ proposes to Nicole

“I definitely think EJ is in love with Nicole and that he’s been thinking about [proposing] for a while, but this just accelerated the decision,” says Dan Feuerriegel (EJ). “He wants to do this, but also there could be a benefit to doing it right now. It comes across as he’s only doing this because of Stefan and Gabi, and it’s true, to a degree, but there’s also depth behind it.”

Nicole is insulted, doubting EJ’s reasons. “EJ doesn’t have a ring or anything,” explains Feuerriegel. “It’s so impromptu. So lame. There’s no fanfare, and it seems like there’s no thought behind it. Nicole’s like, ‘What are you doing, you idiot?’ EJ knows he kind of got caught. He’s like, ‘Ah, yeah. Sorry. My bad.’ There’s no way to talk his way out of this one.”

Yet EJ is completely sincere, insists the actor. “I’m pretty sure this is the first time he’s actually professed his love for her. It’s 100 percent genuine, but he’s also using a situation to his advantage, which Nicole doesn’t appreciate.”

Later, Nicole admits to her unborn baby the true reason she couldn’t accept EJ’s proposal: She might be carrying Eric’s child. Meanwhile, EJ, who’s unaware of Nicole’s predicament, remains hopeful that she’ll come around. “EJ is definitely in love with Nicole, but he’s also not going to pressure her,” says Feuerriegel. “He’s going to let her take her time, especially since she called him out.”
