<p><strong>ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE</strong> has moved front and center with dizzying rapidity. Adobe is going all-in with a new generative AI fill engine called Firefly, which has been trained on a mass of Adobe stock and public domain images. If you&rsquo;ve seen what Dall-E is capable of, you&rsquo;ll understand why this is a such a powerful tool. You simply select an area or object and use a text prompt to describe what you want. A demonstration shows the phrase &lsquo;classic car from the 50s&rsquo; producing just that. The images match the lighting, perspective, and even add reflections. The generated images are created in a new layer, so you can experiment non-destructively.</p>
<p>How much do you need to change before it becomes &lsquo;your&rsquo; image? Can AIgenerated art ever belong to anybody? The US Copyright Office has released a new set of guidelines that help define what human authorship requires, but it&rsquo;s still a fuzzy area. A recent AI comic, for example, was granted copyright for the complete work, but not the individual images.</p>
<p>Firefly has a few quirks. Currently, every pixel is generated with no transparency, so if you want to add glasses to a face, the eyes get replaced too. Some selective editing with layer masks can correct much of this, though. Faces do look a little plastic, and some goofy results can be generated if there&rsquo;s too much for the AI to do. The biggest drawback is that Firefly can only generate images up to 1080 pixels in either direction. You can split your selection into slices, so for backgrounds this works well, but it isn&rsquo;t so useful if you want to add a complete element. However, Firefly will only improve, as this is just the beta. This phrase is rapidly being over-used with AI, but if you use Photoshop then Firefly earns it: this changes everything.</p>
