MAKING THE RIGHT NOISE

EVOLUTION OF STUDIO MONITORS

The first studio monitor speakers were invented in the early 1940s. These speakers were large, bulky, and relied on vacuum tubes to produce sound. They were primarily used for radio and television broadcasts, rather than music production. However, the introduction of multi-track recording in the late 1950s and early 1960s gave rise to the need for more accurate and transparent studio monitors.

1960s: The first professional studio monitor speakers were introduced. These speakers were designed to produce a flat frequency response, which meant that they did not emphasize any particular range of frequencies. This allowed engineers to hear their recordings accurately and make precise adjustments to the mix. The first professional studio monitor speakers were made by companies such as Altec Lansing, JBL, and Tannoy.

1970s: Studio monitor speakers continued to evolve. Manufacturers began to experiment with new materials and driver designs to improve the accuracy and clarity of the speakers. One of the most significant advancements during this time was the introduction of the three-way speaker system. Three-way speakers used separate drivers for the low, mid, and high frequencies, which resulted in improved frequency response and reduced distortion.

1980s: The introduction of digital recording technology drove further improvements in studio monitor speakers. Digital recordings could capture a wider range of frequencies and dynamic range than analog recordings. To take advantage of this, manufacturers developed new studio monitors that could reproduce these frequencies accurately. New materials such as Kevlar and titanium were also used for driver construction, resulting in improved clarity and detail.
