She Is Called The Lady Steve Irwin Of India
ACHSAH STEFFI JOHN
Education Officer The Madras Crocodile Bank, Chennai
Achsah Steffi John’s love for wildlife was sparked by a childhood admiration for Australian conservationist Steve Irwin, which later became a lifelong passion. Armed with a Zoology degree and a Master’s in Wildlife Biology, Steffi’s commitment led her to the Madras Crocodile Bank in 2019, where she has earned for herself the title of Lady Steve Irwin of India.
As the education officer, she goes beyond just imparting knowledge; Steffi has nurtured a generation of eco-warriors through engaging activities, storytelling, and nature walks, instilling in young people a profound love for nature and wildlife preservation.
Recognised as a regional representative for South Asia on the International Zoo Educators Association board in 2020, Steffi inspires individuals from all walks of life to embrace conservation as stewards of the environment. Her exceptional connection with children and her relentless dedication mark her as a true eco-warrior.
FROM STEFFI TO YOU… “It is important to teach children the right way; rather than saying, ‘Don’t go there, it will bite you’, it would be better to say, ‘Don’t go and annoy the animal’. Instead of telling them, ‘They will bite’, teach them that animals defend themselves if annoyed. We should focus on fostering a sense of respect and understanding.”
