THE DANCE FLOOR’S LEADING LADY
ALL OF 19, DANCER AND CHOREOGRAPHER SAUMYA KAMBLE IS HAVING A MOMENT RIGHT NOW, AND FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS! BY SHARON D’SILVA
In the vibrant world of Indian dance reality TV, stars occasionally emerge with such talent that they leave everyone spellbound. At just 19, Mumbaibased Saumya Kamble is one of those rare sensations.
Long before she dazzled audiences with her jawdropping performances and clinched the title in India’s Best Dancer Season 2 (IBD) in 2021, Saumya was already a dedicated dancer – she started at the tender age of two. Her mother Shailaja, a firm believer in her potential, ensured she trained in over seven styles. By the age of 11, Saumya knew that dancing was her true calling. “I had participated in several reality shows already, but IBD allowed me to showcase my talents to the fullest, thanks to the supportive environment and the accepting space,” she enthuses. “It was a competition, a place of exchange, and a playground where I could take on challenges and grow more confident in my art.”
She’s had standout performances on tracks such as Resham ka rumal and Prem jaal mein, but, for Saumya, one of her most cherished moments was dancing to Khatouba in front of Asha Bhosle, who honoured her with a Natraj statue and the title of ‘Chhoti Helen’. Receiving such high praise from a legendary icon has been one of the highlights of her life.
