The Abominable Dr. Phibes
BD, Arrow
Seeking some Old Testament-style revenge on the doctors he blames for the death of his wife, the hideously scarred Dr. Phibes embarks on a campaign of terror, subjecting his victims to elaborate death traps inspired by the Ten Plagues of Egypt.
In anyone else's hands, this protoSaw would have been a straight-up horror, but with Robert Fuest behind the camera and Vincent Price giving it all in the title role, ...Dr. Phibes (1971) was transformed into a gorgeous live-action comic book, whose grisly sadism is tempered by a delicious high-camp tone.
An American Werewolf in London
4K BD, Arrow
Director John Landis followed up 1980's The Blues Brothers with this horror-comedy gem a year later. Celebrated for its Oscarwinning physical FX, An American Werewolf in London treads a fine line between visceral horror and morbidly dark humour as its pair of young backpackers (David Naughton and Griffin Dunne) get a nasty surprise on the North York Moors.
Landis's set-pieces are a joy, particularly the transformation scene sound-tracked by Sam Cooke's Blue Moon, and the script is sharper than a lycanthrope's claw.
