Sanaa Lathan's mantra is simple. "If it's not a 'hell yes,' it's a 'no," says the 52-year-old actress and filmmaker of navigating her career. She's declared "hell yes" to enough wide-ranging roles-from breaking out in 1998's Blade and 1999's The Best Man to making her directorial debut with the 2022 hit On the Come Up and appearing on Succession and Curb Your Enthusiasm-that these days, every project "has to be a passion project," she says. Especially with her work behind the camera, "the pressure is real," she says. "Navigating life as a Black woman in Hollywood is not for the faint of heart."
