THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY
Total Film|June 2023
Margaret Qualley shot to fame with Netflix’s Maid and has been racking up an impressive body of work with an enviable list of auteurs. But despite her star rising, she continues to choose complex, challenging material over cookie-cutter roles. Total Film catches up with her ahead of the release of Claire Denis’ STARS AT NOON, a sweat-drenched, politically charged thriller that’s anything but conventional.

THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY

Honestly, like, who would have thought?’ Fast-rising star Margaret Qualley is laughing about those crazy coincidences that life can sometimes surprise you with. Filming Claire Denis’ sultry romance Stars at Noon, she ended up back in Panama, a land she first got to know when she was 14 after her father relocated to the Central American country. She revisited all her regular haunts. ‘We ended up shooting in a lot of them, which was really bizarre and felt meant-to-be.’

It’s not destiny but pure chance that brings Qualley’s Trish - a freelance journalist stranded in Nicaragua during the pandemic and selling sex to get by - together with mysterious businessman Daniel (Conversations with Friends’ Joe Alwyn). The couple embark on a heady, intense love affair after he solicits her services one night, with political intrigue casting a heavy pall over their blossoming relationship.

Qualley has been steadily building a filmography defined by auteur-led choices, so it’s no surprise she jumped at the chance to work with Denis, the director of Beau Travail, High Life and Both Sides of the Blade. ‘I’m a huge fan of hers,’ she tells TF over Zoom, describing the opportunity as an ‘honour’. The atmospheric drama is crafted in the French auteur’s singular vision as Denis touches on recurring themes that have haunted her work: sexuality, alienation and colonialism, all brought to the forefront with an evocative sensuality and a dreamy languor.

Snow Time to Die - Red One J.K. Simmons' Santa gets kidnapped. Luckily, Dwayne Johnson's on hand to save him...

If 2022's Violent Night gave us Die Hard in a Santa suit, Jake Kasdan's Red One could be retitled North Pole Has Fallen. The world imagined by Kasdan finds Saint Nick kidnapped two days before Christmas Eve. It's up to Dwayne Johnson's head of security, Callum Drift, and Chris Evans' unscrupulous hacker-for-hire, Jack O'Malley, to hunt down the man in red in time for the big day.

Back With a Vengeance - Sir Ridley Scott returns to the Colosseum with Gladiator II, the long-awaited sequel to the greatest historical epic of this century. Total Film meets the director and cast to discover how Maximus' legacy is echoing in eternity.

Ridley Scott is not a filmmaker to repeat himself. It's a trait that's all the more remarkable when you consider how prolific he's been over the nearly five decades since his feature debut, 1977's The Duellists. Alien prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are the only times he's gone back to the same world, and those films are radical departures from the original.

Bad Romance - Timestalker Alice Lowe falls in love with the wrong man time and time again...

Her antidote to that? Timestalker a dark not-quite-romcom set over the course of centuries. Her protagonist Agnes finds herself attracted to the same man, Alex (Dunkirk's Aneurin Barnard), in every lifetime as she's reincarnated in the 1680s, 1790s, 1980s and the 22nd century. As romantic as that may sound, there's a bit of a catch: 'He's sort of a dickhead. On the surface he's appealing, but under, he's not.'
