The term "middle of nowhere" has become a cliché used by city-dwellers when they visit a place that requires more than a direct flight, train or car ride to get to. But it is an apt phrase to describe this tropical paradise located in the Anambas archipelago. More private island retreat than typical commercial resort, Bawah Reserve has a minimalist approach to luxury and a maximalist approach to sustainability.
Given how remote it is, a bit of a commute is to be expected. Getting here from Singapore includes a private car ride to the ferry terminal, a 30-minute ferry ride to Batam, a 15-minute car ride to Batam airport, and an 80-minute flight on an amphibious seaplane (which takes off on wheels and lands on floats) to the island itself. Pilots are barefoot and signboards are raised to indicate how much of the journey is left — it feels like a throwback to a bygone era of travel. Despite the multiple modes of transport, the journey is seamless and comfortable. You’ll be well taken care of: If you’re checking in luggage, it will be looked after and carried over by the Bawah team every step of the journey, and there will also be a priority section for immigration when you arrive at Batam, so you can avoid any waiting time in between.
