CHAPTER FIVE

For the fifth year running, Louis Vuitton is tapping on contemporary artists to give its timeless Capucines bag some fresh spins. The 2023 Louis Vuitton Artycapucines Collection sees the Maison embracing five artists — Billie Zangewa, Ewa Juszkiewicz, Liza Lou, Tursic & Mille, and Ziping Wang. Polish painter Juszkiewicz — known for her expressions of female identity — tells L’OFFICIEL SINGAPORE about her surrealistic Ginger Locks painting, which she chose to transpose to her design, complete with a striking string of gold-tone pearls.

Tell us about yourself.

I grew up in Gdańsk, in northern Poland — a city with over a thousand years of history. In a natural way, from childhood I was surrounded by monuments — old art and old architecture. That’s when my fascination with the past, the history of art, and old paintings began. My childhood was [spent] in the 1980s and ’90s. I remember that at that time in Poland, the streets were grey. I missed having colour and variety around me. I found it all in fashion. I loved looking through fashion magazines, full of colour and crazy shapes. It sparked my imagination and creativity.

What’s the first piece of artwork that really left an impression on you?
