What was your main inspiration for the Dior Winter 2022-2023 men’s collection? There is always a dialogue with the founder of the House of Dior in what we do. But this time it is a more personal “conversation” with Christian Dior, which seems particularly apposite in this 75th anniversary year.
I wanted to look at the archive, at the purity of the beginnings of the House, at its original impulse. We looked at the initial collections and focused on the architecture, taking these elements and transforming them almost instinctively in a masculine way for today, always keeping the joie de vivre at the heart of Christian Dior’s clothing.
There is the spirit of Paris in the collection and a love of French fashion. There is also a sense of utility with luxury. I think that comes from menswear but also from Christian Dior in the immediate postwar period. It was an interesting time, both aesthetically and culturally, when people were yearning for something else, for something hopeful. That felt appropriate for now; in really looking deeply at somebody else’s history, that of Christian Dior in this case, and getting to know them more personally, it is interesting in terms of the parallels you draw with your own history in a collection. In many ways, this is the most “Christian Dior” and the most “Kim Jones” collection that we’ve complete for the House.
