Donica would know. This spring he'll play Lancelot in a Lincoln Center Theater revival of Camelot that hopes to restore the Lerner and Loewe musical to its Golden Age glory while also tapping into America’s current moment. And this Camelot has a secret weapon: Aaron Sorkin.
Though the musical is based on the Arthurian legend and The Once and Future King, audiences have bemoaned its less than congenial book. The narrative focuses on the murky love triangle among Arthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot and ends on a note that isn’t necessarily fairytale friendly. So when director Bartlett Sher decided to revisit Camelot, he asked the Lerner and Loewe estate, “Could we look at the possibility of a new book?”
