<p>Outside the kitchen, Williams and Sodi&mdash;whose most recent project is the Commerce Inn, a tavern inspired by Shaker simplicity&mdash; are no less focused on the comfort and care of those around them. The couple&rsquo;s alliance with the Coalition for the Homeless was forged a decade ago, thanks to an introduction by their architect, Richard Lewis, who serves on the organization&rsquo;s board. Ever since, they have amplified their efforts, leveraging their establishments and their voices to raise awareness for the cause. Williams says, &ldquo;Many are unaware of how homelessness predominantly affects families, children, and especially single mothers, often fleeing from domestic abuse. As New Yorkers, we view the entire city as our extended community. When parts of this community are in despair, it&rsquo;s our duty to respond.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Williams and Sodi, who are also involved with Edible Schoolyard NYC, are particularly moved by such Coalition initiatives as First Steps, which offers job training to unhoused women, and Camp Homeward Bound, a summer sleepaway camp tailored to children experiencing homelessness. &ldquo;The plight of homeless families weighs heavy on New York City,&rdquo; Williams says, &ldquo;and it&rsquo;s about time we all did more.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Anyone who has spent time in one of the pair&rsquo;s restaurants knows they&rsquo;re dedicated to the idea of community. Their eateries are evocative love letters to the West Village, the enclave they call home, and they&rsquo;re driven by a reverence for European establishments they aim to replicate close to home. Sodi says, &ldquo;In a way, we crafted these places in our neighborhood, our sanctuary, for our own joy and that of our community.&rdquo;</p>
<p>With their rare blend of culinary virtuosity and deep-seated empathy, Williams and Sodi offer not just food but food for thought, and they remind us of the responsibilities we hold toward our communities and each other.&nbsp;</p>
