IN 2021, THE American Museum of Natural History in New York held an exhibition titled Beautiful Creatures. It featured the most eccentric jewellery from the past century, including Mexican actor María Félix's crocodile necklace by Cartier. Félix had famously walked into the house's Paris store in 1975 with her pet crocodile and commissioned a necklace that would pay homage to it. Cartier obliged and crafted two crocodiles joined at their tails, set with more than a thousand glowing emeralds and yellow diamonds. For Félix, crocodiles resembled freedom, an ease she related with in the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.
