The intention of the flight was to conduct touch-and-go circuit training at Diemerskraal Aerodrome and then return to FACT. The flight was conducted under visual meteorological conditions (VMC) by day and under the provisions of Part 141 of the Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) 2011 as amended.
The crew stated that during the flight, they omitted to conduct some of the in-flight and approach checks as required by the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as there was a discussion in the cockpit about the prevailing weather conditions in the area of Diemerskraal airfield, which had a significant crosswind at the time from both sides of the runway orientated 04 and 22. The flight instructor and the student pilot had attempted to contact the airfield owner to acquire a detailed weather update, but this was in vain. The flight instructor and the student pilot confirmed that during the flight and the joining phase at the airfield, they did not change the selected fuel tank. However, when they arrived at the airfield, there was a strong crosswind and the flight instructor decided to demonstrate the crosswind technique to the student pilot. According to the instructor, a maximum rudder with the appropriate bank angle to the left-wing technique to maintain constant course was established on long final and was maintained until touchdown.
After the initial touch-and-go circuit, the flight instructor decided that they should return to FACT as he felt that the wind was too strong and the environment was not conducive for training. During the initial climb at a height of approximately 150 feet above ground level, the engine started to lose power and surged, whereafter, it stopped. The flight instructor and the student pilot had little time to react and they opted to land straight ahead on an open field.

Maputo airshow 2024 What a treat!
On Sunday 16 June Christine and I returned from attending the Maputo airshow and what a fantastic experience this was not only for estimated 15 000 spectators, but also the members of the media present.
