American Airlines shelled out an undisclosed, nonrefundable deposit on the initial twenty airplanes, which, under the terms of the agreement must meet industry-standard operating, performance, and safety requirements as well as American's additional customary conditions prior to delivery.
Boom's Overture is a proposed supersonic aircraft with an advertised maximum speed of Mach 1.7 and a range of 4,250-nautical miles. The 170,000-pound machine is to be powered by four moderate-bypass, non-afterburning engines which Rolls Royce has yet to design, test, build, and have certified. The only extant engines capable of actualizing Boom's performance figures are slung under and alongside modern jet-fighters. However, such engines lack the fuel-economy and reliability upon which viable commercial aviation operations are largely predicated.

Boom Supersonic is transforming air travel with Overture, the fastest airliner, optimized for speed, safety, and sustainability. Carrying 65-80 passengers, Overture will fly at twice the speed of today's airliners and will run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Overture's commercial order book, including purchases and options from United Airlines and Japan Airlines, stands at 70 aircraft. Boom is also working with the United States Air Force and Northrop Grumman for military and defence applications of Overture. Suppliers collaborating with Boom on the Overture programme include Collins Aerospace, Eaton, Safran Landing Systems, and Rolls-Royce. Designed and built in the United States, the first Overture aircraft begins production in 2024, rolls out in 2025, begins flight test in 2026, and flies first passengers in 2029.
