AG's peat-free journey

LAST month AG editor Garry Coward-Williams and I visited a garden centre near the office. It is part of the British Garden Centres chain, well stocked with plants and accessories, but what caught our eye was the huge variety of peat-free composts available.

The prices varied, but when we looked carefully at some of the packaging we were unable to find exactly what went into the mix. Of course they all promised the finest ingredients and the best results but without giving any specifics, and Garry and I found this extremely concerning.

Sometime in the next year, compost containing peat will be banned in England and we have already received many letters from AG readers worried about how this will affect their gardening.
