<p>At least we don&rsquo;t have to wear the feathers! The Princess of Wales and her aunt by marriage, the Duchess of Edinburgh, appeared to relish their civilian style at the Order of The Garter Service at Windsor Castle in June. Meanwhile the Prince of Wales and Duke of Edinburgh wore grand velvet robes and ostrich-plumed hats for one of the most traditional ceremonies in the royal calendar. Kate and Sophie were spared the ceremonial garb because neither are members of the Order of the Garter, which dates back to medieval times. King Edward III was so inspired by tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table that he set up his own group &ndash; the Order of the Garter. Along with a few senior royals, the order consists of 24 male and female companions chosen by the King, the Sovereign of the Garter, for their public service.</p>

<p><strong>Dressed to impress </strong></p>
<p>For two women from ordinary &ndash; albeit privileged &ndash; backgrounds, the annual Garter Day procession must be one of those pinch-me occasions. The Princess, who looked stunning in a polka-dot midi dress from Alessandra Rich, and the Duchess, in a floral Emilia Wickstead frock, appeared to stifle a few giggles during the pomp and ceremony. And although the men&rsquo;s hats were perhaps the more ornate, Kate in Philip Treacy and Sophie in Jane Taylor London were not to be outshone. Both carried handbags by Strathberry, an upmarket brand from Edinburgh. Kate opted for the Strathberry Multrees Chain wallet, &pound;295, and Sophie the trathberry Box Crescent, &pound;495.</p>

<p><strong>Grand old time </strong></p>
<p>The day began with the formal investiture in the Throne Room at Windsor of the two newest appointments, Lord Patten of Barnes and Baroness Ashton of Upholland, followed by a procession accompanied by a marching band, all in ceremonial dress &ndash; the mantle robe, which is dark blue velvet and lined with white taffeta, a hat of black velvet with a plume of white ostrich and black heron feathers, and the Garter, which is worn by knights around their left calf and by ladies around their left arm. Other royal knights and ladies joining the King and Queen in their finery included the Princess Royal, as well as companions Sir Tony Blair and Sir John Major, both former prime ministers.</p>
