We all like to think our children are special, but in the case of Prince George, he really is. Rewind 10 years, and many of us will remember his proud parents presenting their firstborn to the world on the steps of the Lindo Wing at London’s St Mary’s Hospital. Born only the day before at 4.24pm on July 22, 2013, weighing 8lb 6oz, the then-unnamed third in line to the throne was oblivious to all fuss.
As the Prince celebrates his tenth birthday this summer, royal commentators say he is no longer oblivious to the spotlight that will forever fall upon him. It’s reported William and Catherine told him of his unique destiny around the time of his seventh birthday, during the summer of 2020.
‘George knows that he is going to be King,’ says Katie Nicholl, Vanity Fair royal correspondent and author of The New Royals. ‘But what Kate and William are not doing is weighing him down with a sense of duty. It’s not an easy job to prepare one of your children to be the future monarch.’
The pouty toddler
As we’ve watched George grow up, alongside siblings Princess Charlotte, almost eight, and Prince Louis, nearly five, we’ve had tantalising glimpses into his home life and, increasingly, seen him on royal engagements.
