The pyres along the banks of the holy river Ganga were being prepared in all readiness to be lit by the sacred fire of the Manikarnika Ghat. People kept arriving at the Ghat through the narrow streets carrying knowns and unknowns on their shoulders. Corpses were being carried like sacks of grains. The air was filled with smoke, ash, bone chalk, dust and heaviness. It was suffocating and absorbing at the same time.
