<p>Furthermore, greatly increased rates of melting could trigger floods, landslides and other geohazards in these very same river systems. Greenland and parts of Antarctica are said to be literally "hemorrhaging ice," which could well increase sea levels worldwide at a much faster rate than has been projected-in fact, a rate some six times higher per one new projection.</p>
<p>The prime culprit continues to be atmospheric warming. An article in the journal Science by David Rounce (Carnegie Mellon University and University of Alaska, Fairbanks) and colleagues suggests half of the world's mountain glaciers (excluding Greenland and Antarctica) will be gone by the year 2100, even if nations of the world could follow the Paris climate agreement to limit global warming to 1.5&deg;C above&nbsp;pre-industrial levels. However, this limit already appears unlikely. Instead, we're currently headed toward an increase of 2.7&deg;C, which these researchers suggest could eliminate 70 percent of Earth's mountain glaciers.
