Thanks to plate tectonics, the face of planet Earth is in constant flux. Earth scientists have long used evidence from rocks along with computer models to show how South America once hugged Africa, how Scotland has journeyed from the southern hemisphere to the far north, or how all the continents crashed together into a super-continent called Pangaea. Now one team has taken these techniques and the current state of tectonic motion to give a glimpse of the face of future Earth. And it's not pretty!
Writing in the journal Nature Geoscience, Alexander Farnsworth (University of Bristol, UK) and colleagues have projected Earth some 250 million years from now. Today's seven continents are glommed together into a sort of misshapen donut with most of the landmass to the north and an inland sea in the hole. This future supercontinent centers on the equator. That, and the immense landmass along with intense volcanism spewing carbon dioxide, will result in a desert planet not unlike Australia on steroids. Temperatures might average 105&deg;F!
Farnsworth and his team have dubbed this barren supercontinent Pangaea Ultima. They project as much as 92 percent of it could be unsuited to mammalian survival if indeed any mammals survive the Anthropocene. But I assume cockroaches will like it just fine.
