But within the earth sciences, seismologists are euphoric about the possibilities of AI doing them one better.
As reported by Alexandra Witze in Nature News, three recent research papers in Geophysical Research Letters, Earth's Future, and Scientific Reports embrace artificial intelligence in the form of deep-learning neural network models in the quest to improve earthquake forecasting.
In all three papers, deep-learning models prove superior to conventional methods in forecasting earthquake aftershocks.
While Witze notes these preliminary studies "apply only to limited situations," the handwriting is on the wall. The potential of machine learning to assist humans in the face of disastrous earthquakes should be reassuring. Rather than replace us, the bots may save us!
