For the 27th year, The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) has mesmerised visitors by transforming the picturesque Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens into a lush wonderland. Across the five-day event, the vibrant and enchanting display gardens have absolutely captivated landscaping professionals, amateur green thumbs and nature lovers alike.
This year, horticulturist, garden designer and Home Beautiful columnist Ashley James attended the event, chatting to the teams behind his favourite entries. He found many of the display gardens were inspired by the new perennial movement, highlighting the use of floral plantings that return year after year, and adopting a more subtle, rambling and green approach. Read on for Ashley's take on this blossoming event, plus behind-the-scenes information from the talented people who brought these entries to life.
'INNER SANCTUM'
With over 20 years' experience in the landscaping industry, Paul Pritchard (above) returned to take out Gold in the Boutique Garden category with his stunning creation, 'Inner Sanctum'.
This garden, designed by Paul and constructed by Adam Hompas Landscapes, was carefully created to immerse the viewer in a tranquil, Mediterranean-inspired atmosphere.
One of its strengths lies in the flexible layout, which can be adapted to fit gardens of almost any size, plus an ambience that is both aspirational yet entirely possible to achieve at home.
The gentle tones seen in the stone craftsmanship, paving and rendered wall add to the formation of an invigorating pool, enticing you to take a refreshing plunge or a leisurely soak. The inviting daybed exudes a peaceful atmosphere, providing a sanctuary from the hectic demands of life. Subtle outdoor lighting effectively prolongs the garden's useable hours and pleasure, well into the evening.
