The language we use around colour is always evolving. As new insights and new desires emerge, so too will the words we use to describe the shades we see. For example, the discovery of neon led to ‘neon pink’ and ‘neon green,’ and these are much more recent descriptors than those of ‘sky blue’ and ‘forest green.’
An even more recent colour to enter our vocabulary is greige – a calming blend of grey and beige. First introduced into the fashion world by Giorgio Armani in 1975, this subtle hue has become a popular choice for interiors over the past few years. ‘Greige has become an iconic addition to the neutral palette – redefining the borders between colours, and introducing a whole new one into the equation that is suited to any and every interior style,’ says Amanda Telford at CTD Tiles (ctdtiles.co.uk).
But why did we need this new shade? We’ve always loved decorating with neutrals, and while grey held its own in the neutral spotlight for many years, a shift in mindset had us craving something a little warmer. The addition of earthy tones into the coolness of grey softens the overall feel, for a space that feels more relaxed, easy and comforting.
