Great trends never die … they just evolve. Open a fashion magazine today and you might think you are looking at a magazine from the ‘90s. Just as fashion trends make comebacks, so too do home-related trends. “Fashions are an eternal restart. So are furniture fashions,” says Sandrine Fanchette, co-owner of Roche Bobois South Africa and Mauritius. “In the ‘70s, our designers were already creating organic shapes, and today we have a return of these trends.” And on that note – welcome back, curves!
THE RISE OF CURVES
Karen Cawthorne, owner of KARE Johannesburg, says one of the reasons the curve is growing in popularity is due to the biophilic trend. “The move towards biophilic design is the driving force behind adding curves into our living spaces. Incorporating nature into our built environment was an organic move during the pandemic, making us pay more attention to our surroundings’ impact on our wellbeing.”
Nazih Mustapha, CEO of B.Italian, explains this further: “As our home increasingly becomes a sanctuary, especially since the pandemic, there’s been a trend for a calming, inviting interior design aesthetic. Enter the use of curves that not only soften spaces with hard edges and angles, but also are visually appealing with their organic form inspired by nature.”
