Quality wooden furniture can last a lifetime and become a treasured family heirloom. But even the most hardy and durable pieces can suffer from wear and tear if not properly maintained. We share top tips to ensure that your furniture ages gracefully and will be enjoyed for generations to come.

MAINTAIN HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE As a natural material, solid wood will respond to its environment: contracting in extremely dry conditions and expanding when very wet. This can result in cracks in the piece so you may need to use an air conditioner or humidifier to maintain the humidity in your home. A good idea is to keep your pieces away from direct contact with heating and cooling vents, as well as direct sunlight.

PROPERLY SEAL YOUR FURNITURE Water and heat damage can ruin the surface of your wooden furniture. Frikkie Greeff, managing director at Woodoc, advises that you make sure that wood is properly sealed to protect it against mechanical and moisture damage. “If the wood shows scratches or water damage (moisture rings), it may be advisable to sand and reseal. Any of the Woodoc Interior Sealers Woodoc 5, 10 or 20) will protect the wood effectively.” Use coasters when placing hot drinks on wooden tables, and if any water spills on the surface wipe it up before it soaks through the finish.
