We listen when our self-talk happens in our minds; we listen to whatever is imprinted in our memories and our past conditioning. Many a time we do not hear exactly what the other person is saying, and we form an opinion. We assume and interpret that a certain thing must have been said and, believing that thing to be true, we get on with our conversation. One of the most powerful influences on our attitude is not the thing that happens to us, but how we respond to the thing that happens to us, that determines our personality. It is by knowing the secret of how to control our "inner dialogue", our "self-talk" or what we say to ourselves, that we can learn to change our internal conversations into something motivational, healthful, pleasurable, and inspiring. So that these talks encourage us to accomplish our goals in life.
When asked, people often say that their inner lives contain a lot of words. Psychologists use the term "inner speech" for this phenomenon, in which people talk to themselves silently inside their heads. It has a cousin called "private speech," in which people talk to themselves audibly. If you say something to yourself like "Remember to get some coffee" or "Stick to the plan," without making a sound, then you are using your inner speech. If you say something similar to yourself out loud, it is a private speech.
