THE ERA WAS THE 1940S, a time when the emblems of art déco were fizzing out to ashes. After the devastating aftermath of World War II, the world moved past the bling of colourful jewels and facade of glamour. Modernism dawned, heralding a chapter of minimalist lines and coloured metals.
Materials were scarce during this period. Platinum went to industrial and war industries, nudging jewellers of the time to experiment with other metals. Gold was the primary choice. A highly malleable precious metal, it could be shaped into structures and voguish shapes. Even then, artisans had to be creative, utilising what little they had as efficiently as possible, without sacrificing artistry. Shapes and textures became the focus of jewellery-making, propelled forward by innovative experiments.
