MORPH BY PHYN was the project that introduced me to Phyn Studio, and I’ve been a fan since then. Sustainable seems to be the way the label approaches its creation but Phynix Tan, the creative mind behind Phyn Studio never really highlights that. Reworking with existing materials seemed to come naturally to him. To see Phynix disassembling a sneaker and reintroducing it as a 3-D butterfly, impressive was an understatement. Like Midas Touch, Phynix gives a new identity to the objects he lays his hands on, or like what he’d say, creating possibility.
Storytelling and fashion design, Phyn Studio is the epitome of straddling two worlds. Capturing the nowness while creating experimental silhouettes, Phynix put forward a world of his own governed by his vision – that involves apple – and his unarguably meticulous craftsmanship.
How did Phyn Studio start?
Phyn Studio was founded in 2018 after I left my full-time job at the local designer brand Motoguo. The debut collection that established Phyn Studio was Spring Summer 2019, we named it “The Story of A New Name”.
How would you introduce and describe the brand?
Influenced by the past, the label explores the ‘now’ and strives for the future with experimental silhouettes. It pushes the boundaries of genderless fashion with pieces that are crafted for all. Phyn Studio is the epitome of androgyny.
All collections that I have presented are related to different life elements and personal experiences. My designs are usually influenced by time, people, ambience and movies that I find interesting, and I play around with different fabrics, materials, textures and silhouettes. To me, these variations represent the emotions and stories I want to translate into my wearable pieces of clothing.
