The journey from early speculative concepts to the sophisticated systems we interact with now is marked by significant milestones and challenges.
Ancient roots and early theories
The idea of creating intelligent machines dates back to ancient civilizations. In Greek mythology, the concept of automata-self-operating machines-was prevalent. Talos, a giant bronze figure created by the god Hephaestus, was designed to protect Crete by circling the island three times daily. Similarly, myths about mechanical beings appeared in various cultures, reflecting an enduring fascination with the notion of artificial life.
In the Middle Ages, inventors and alchemists developed rudimentary mechanical devices, such as clocks and automated toys, which demonstrated the principles of mechanical intelligence. While these early devices were far from what we consider AI today, they laid the groundwork for future technological advancements by showcasing the potential of automated systems.
Birth of modern AI
The formal study of AI began in the mid-20th century, with Alan Turing's groundbreaking work providing the foundation for the field. Turing's 1950 paper, "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," posed profound questions about machine intelligence. Turing proposed that machines could simulate human intelligence and introduced the Turing Test, a method for evaluating a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour indistinguishable from that of a human. Turing's ideas were both revolutionary and provocative, challenging existing notions of intelligence and setting the stage for future AI research.
