In recent months, speculation has been rife that former sprinter turned Seven sports presenter Matt Shirvington is being eyed to fill the hot seat next to Natalie Barr.

However, there has been some chatter from sceptics who believe ‘Shirvo’ is “still too green” to take on one of brekkie TV’s most prestigious roles. Even so, New Idea can confirm this is looking even more likely, now that one of his biggest competitors has officially been ruled out of the race.

Speaking exclusively to New Idea, our well-placed network insider explains that any plans to move current Sunrise sports reporter Mark Beretta into the co-host seat are unlikely, as it’s believed it would “compromise” the success he has found as one of Australia’s leading sports presenters.
